Workshop Description:

This 8-session workshop focuses on developing a clear understanding of number systems and arithmetic operations. Each session explores key concepts such as place value, number comparison, the four operations, negative numbers, and the order of operations. Activities include numerical practice, problem-solving tasks, and real-life contexts.

Session Overview:

Session 1: Reading, Writing & Place Value of Numbers

• Numbers up to 10 million
• Word, standard, and expanded form
• Decimal and whole number place value
• Use of place value grids and digit cards
• Recap of odd and even numbers

Session 2: Comparing, Ordering & Rounding

• Comparing using <, >, =
• Ordering whole numbers and decimals
• Rounding to nearest 10, 100, 1,000
• Rounding decimals to 1 or 2 decimal places

Session 3: Negative Numbers in Real Life

• Estimating values on a number line
• Comparing and ordering negative numbers
• Everyday contexts (temperature, money, floors)
• Simple addition and subtraction with negatives

Session 4: Addition & Subtraction

• Column and mental methods
• Word problems involving money and population
• Estimating answers
• Identifying calculation errors
• Timed practice tasks

Session 5: Multiplication Strategies

• Mental methods (doubling, halving)
• Short and long multiplication
• 4-digit × 2-digit calculations
• Applications in cost and scaling
• Multiplying decimals

Session 6: Division Strategies

• Short and long division methods
• Division with remainders in context
• Division by 1- and 2-digit numbers
• Visual approaches: sharing and grouping
• Division of tenths in word problems

Session 7: Mixed Operations & BODMAS

• Understanding order of operations (BIDMAS/BODMAS)
• Use of brackets
• Solving mixed expressions
• Identifying reasoning errors
• Multi-step problems and puzzles

Session 8: Review + Mini Assessment

• Review of key concepts from all previous sessions
• Practice tasks covering all four operations
• Mini assessment (25–30 marks)
• Summary activities and peer discussion
